Risk assessment failing revealed by ladder fall
A failure by Peterborough and Stamford Hospitals' NHS Foundation Trust to carry out and implement a risk assessment for work at height very nearly cost the life of a workman during May 2004 when he fell from a ladder and on to and through a fragile rooflight at Peterborough District Hospital, while removing leaves from guttering. He sustained relatively minor injury and returned to work some weeks later, but had been very close to falling a further distance to a floor below.
At Peterborough Magistrates' Court the Trust admitted failing to ensure the workman's safety, for which it was fined £3,000, with costs of £1,330.
