Biological agents
Dear All,
I'm researching the likelihood of picking up various bacteria, such as E.coli, Hepatitis and even leptospirosis from being in areas where effluent is found in an open environment by workers. Does anyone have any instances or know of where I could get some information on possible numbers to back up my work?
Thanks,

The HSE produce some really good guidance of different biological agents and you can download the separate information directly from HSE books.
You may also if you are researching this like to check out the Public Health Laboratory web site. I used this for some research before putting together a short presentation of Blood Borne Infections. You can relate to the UK incident rate for say Hep B and even check out separate areas in the UK, you will also find the incidence information on Leptospirosis. The reality is that in the type of environment you describe (could be sewer work) your interest should be about the route of infection, likely to be hand to mouth contact. Good PPE is essential as well as some good hygiene facilities
(showers etc), there is HSE guidance on sewer work.
Can you give some more information on "where effluent is found"
Mark
