NEBOSH VACANCY

I am a qualified lawyer, specialising in education law advice. I teach Law, part-time as part of the NEBOSH Health and Safety Diploma at North Nottinghamshire FE College. I am also a Company Director. I am CRB checked and references can be provided on request.

I hold the professional qualification of the Institute of Legal Executives. In addition I hold the NEBS Supervisory Certificate and a Certificate in Business Administration. I also hold Certificates for Business and Private Enterprise skills.

I have used my legal training and work experience to diversify into the field of Health and Safety. As a lawyer I was called upon to give advice and presentations on a wide variety of issues in this field. This allowed me to develop my practical skills viz ; I have been called upon to advise and give presentations on Health and Safety issues outside the legal environment. I am confident in these matters and enjoy the challenges these issues sometimes bring to the fore. I am looking forward to listening to, acquiring and sharing ideas with other course individuals and students. In particular, I see the role of mentor invaluable for advice and encouragement.

I have attended and presented numerous training conferences on law-related issues.

In the past, I have worked with students to provide close support and guidance. I have worked with Teachers, Governors, outside support agencies and Local Education Authorities to name but a few. My work also meant liaising with organisations such as Connexions or Young Offender Teams. Some of my work has also required contact with Social Services and I am sensitive to such matters.

I have had to learn to recognise those individuals whose education provision may need supplementing with additional support or alternate provision. This skill has been acquired by a combination of experience and training, particularly in the area of Special Educational Needs. I am therefore familiar with the drafting of; Behaviour Support Plans, Statements of Special Educational Needs, Pastoral Support Plans and Individual Education Plans. I am particularly familiar with work involving disaffected young people and those at risk of exclusion.

To this end, I am empathetic in my approach to my work, which always involves building a relationship of trust between myself and individuals to work towards identified goals.

I often had to work towards strict time deadlines within a pressurised environment. I have had to deal with situations of conflict and handling difficult parents and individuals, whilst retaining the overall interest of the student in accordance with policies and the statutory framework. This meant coping with stressful situations in a collected manner, even though the student may display challenging traits due to conditions such as ADHD or Autism for example.

I am confident in supervising individuals. However, where necessary I am prepared to liaise with others as circumstances may dictate. I therefore recognise the importance of good communication and listening in working with others for the benefit of others.

I consider myself an able advocate, strategist and communicator with team leadership qualities.

I am flexible in working arrangements, adapting to needs as situations arise. I enjoy group work situations and encourage team working in order to share ideas and facilitate close communication on matters. I am used to working unsociable hours due to the nature of my past employment and accept this.

Due to the very nature of my legal background, I keep a keen eye on current developments. I am also required to undertake continuing professional development. This involves regular training and research to enable me to retain up to date and focused in the most appropriate manner.

I am a confident and literate PC user, often using web-based resources for research.

I have occasionally contributed to the Education pages in the Sheffield Star newspaper, answering queries on education matters. I have also participated in interviews for both local and national radio stations on education related matters.

I am familiar with good working practices in line with race, sex and disability policies.

I am familiar with alternative education provision, such as ASDAN and also shared school and work-based placement. I have been able to facilitate such provision for many individuals, especially those at risk of disaffection.

My work has taken me to admission appeals, disciplinary and exclusion hearings and I am therefore very familiar with practice and procedure in these fields.

I am passionate about and committed to the promotion of good education provision.

Please hesitate to contact me should require further information. I can be contacted by telephone on 07973 258762.

I look forward to your response.
