Defuse conflict and improve personal security at work - training
Courtesy of the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH), a way to tackle confrontation (with colleagues, the public or business customers) and its resultant fallout at work is now available.
CIEH estimates that bullying and harassment costs employers £2bn every year with 80 million lost working days. It has newly developed a Qualifications and Curriculum Authority¹ accredited training programme in conflict resolution and personal safety for anyone whose work involves interaction with others, giving workers the means to assess the risk of conflict, improve understanding and defuse confrontational situations.
CIEH says confrontation can manifest through disagreement or misunderstanding which, if left to escalate, can turn into violence, sometimes leaving victims shocked, traumatised, and less able to function well at work.
For information see
www.cieh.org/training or to enrol for this qualification visit

¹ the CIEH’s new Level 2 Conflict Resolution and Personal Safety qualification involves a 6-hour training programme followed by an examination and can be integrated easily into existing health and safety training schedules.
Comment:
“Our new qualification is a quality tool for employees and employers to build a zero tolerance to abusive behaviour. Ideally, work environments should be free of any risks of confrontation. But the reality is they aren’t. Fortunately, confrontation can be predicted and with the right skills it can be managed and controlled. There is an excellent business case for companies to train all their employees in conflict resolution. Apart from fulfilling a fundamental duty of care towards staff, employers can reap vital business benefits: increased productivity, staff retention, improved staff morale, reduction in numbers of lost working days and a lower risk of legal action.” - Head of the CIEH Training Division comments:
