NEBOSH Gen Cert Practical

It has dawned on me that I know very little about the practical exam that follows the written papers. Any help on typical content appreciated.

NEBOSH Gen Cert Practical

I don't know what other colleges or learning establishments do, but when I took my Nebosh practical in 2001 we used the engineering / fabrication workshop at the college. The workshop had a lecture room adjoining to write up your report.

Basically you assume the role of a H+S Inspector going into a premises looking for all thing good and all things bad. You are allocated a period of time to make a survey of the workshop, (many things were set-up badly for us to find). You check on on all the areas that are Risk Assessed,Fire, Coshh,First Aid,Electrical,Welfare facilities etc, check for written records of maintenance, training, risk assessments, safety policy, insurance certificate, HSE safety notice, who are first aiders, check the first aid box, check PAT testing certificates, make sure no fire exits are blocked, check fire extinguishers, any trip hazards ? Also if there are machines in the area you need to check them for gaurding or other safety devices.

Once you have walked around doing you survey, you then write out your report on the state of the premises to the manager of the department, detailing the good and the bad points, explaining the financial penalties of non compliance with the various regulations, trying to quote as many of the appropriate regulations as possible.

I actually found this part of the nebosh the most interesting, but as always time is at a premium to get all the information down.
Hope this helps.
