Electricity company fined £0.4m for fatal accident
Scottish Power has declared it has acted to minimise the possibility of a recurrence of a fatal accident in which its subsidiary company's employee was electrocuted and another injured while working on high voltage distribution cables at Gartness, Lanarkshire, during December 2003.
Investigation of the accident found Scottish Power had not taken adequate steps to prevent him coming into contact with live conductors other than the one he was working on when a power surge occurred.
Deficiencies were identified in the areas of risk assessment, training and supervision in relation to the work activity, placing it in breach of S.2 of the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974 for which it was fined £400,000 at Airdrie Sheriff Court.
Two senior employees of the company were also convicted of an offence under the Principal Act, for which one was fined, the other admonished.
