License sunbed parlours - CIEH
The Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH) is calling for local authorities to be given the power to license tanning salons to prevent from trading those who don't meet standards related to use by children, premises manning and risk information provision.
Concern stems from the prevalence of skin cancer, a European Journal of Cancer recently published a study that showed the British Isles had the highest rates of the disease in children and adolescents in Europe.
CIEH is the professional body representing nearly 10,500 environmental health practitioners, its recent survey reveals that 60% of local authorities who responded do not have and have not considered a skin cancer prevention policy, with over 50% still hosting tanning equipment for public use in facilities they own.
Comment:
“Where sites exist, they must be properly licensed and regulated. As a lead player in the delivery of public health, local authorities need to add sun awareness campaigns to their public health role, including informing youngsters about the dangers of the sun and banning sunbeds from all local authority run sites.
For a local authority to provide sunbeds is akin to a hospital providing cigarettes and not having a prevention policy pays scant regard to our duty to protect and improve public health.” - CIEH Policy Officer.
