Dutch diarist's chestnut tree succumbing to moths and fungus
On safety grounds Amsterdam authorities are expected to fell the chestnut tree made famous in Anne Frank's diary some time next spring, the 170-year diseased tree with rotten roots has been succumbing to fungus and horse chestnut leaf miner moths for some time.
The tree stands in the garden of a canal-side warehouse in Keizersgracht, the Franks' house at Prinsengracht 123 afforded an aspect over the garden from an attic in the annexe used to hide the family during German occupation of Holland in WW2.
Prior to the Franks' deportation form Prinsengracht on 4th August 1944, Anne Frank had noted in her diary entry for May 13th that year that "our chestnut tree from bottom to top is in full bloom and much finer than last year."
It is planned to take a cutting from the old tree and plant it on the same spot.
