French teacher sick leave soars/ pupil clouts teacher with bottle 16.11.06
The French Mutuelle Generale de l'Education Nationale has indicated that 46% of young French teachers have been on sick leave within the last year, on average twice for 11 days, with one third claiming fatigue and stress necessitating the leave.
Parents have recently expressed much concern over teachers' absences, although not always on account of ill health - one parent of a pupil at lycee Canot in Paris complained that her son's maths teacher left on 15 days paternity leave just one day after post-summer classes resumed.
Young teachers working in the more difficult "prioritaire" areas cite the particular problems of pupil indiscipline and violence, only yesterday a teacher in l'Isle d'Abeau was allegedly struck on the head by a 14-year old pupil wielding a pastis bottle, the case appears before a judge in Vienne on 1 February.
