Surfacing sub hits freighter in East China Sea
An investigation is underway into the probable collision yesterday of a Japanese submarine and the Panama-registered freight ship Spring Auster, the incident appears to have occurred 20 miles south of Kyushu when the submarine was surfacing at the end of an exercise.
The China-bound freighter was not initially aware of the contact but later reported a leak in the hull, no injuries were reported of the 75-man submarine crew or the 17-man crew of the chemical-laden freighter.
