15 dead after Guatemalan market blaze
The combination of a casually discarded cigarette and a range of unlicensed firework stalls appear to have been the cause of Monday's fire at a vegetable and cereal market in Guatemala City in which 15 people died.
Around 40 of the shops in the 8km² site were destroyed by the blaze which was fanned by strong winds, the compactness of the market saw many traders and customers trapped, the locus having been one of the numerous unlicensed firework stalls set up on a street just outside the market.
