Hope fading for 15 trapped Polish miners
Polish rescue teams at the site of the methane explosion 1km underground at the Halemba mine in Ruda Slaska found progress difficult yesterday in their attempt to install emergency ventilation pipes for the 15 trapped Silesian miners.
Digging had to be halted when fears of a secondary explosion posed risk for rescuers, with further efforts being made today(Thursday), 8 miners died in the initial explosion.
High concentrations of gas were being recorded prior to the initial explosion at a time when workers were attempting to recover equipment worth 70 million zlotys (£12 million), Polish president Lech Kaczynski cancelled yesterday's trip to Georgia and Friday's visit to Romania.
