Philippines fireworks plant explosion prompts permit checks
An explosion and fatal accident at a fireworks factory in San Manuel in Hinigaran, the Philippines, resulted in an urgent weekend inspection of all fireworks factories in the greater Barangay region, of particular concern for the authorities is the number of premises working unlicensed and possibly in breach of regulations requiring them to be located at least 100 metres from residential zones.
The San Manuel accident occurred in premises 300 metres outside Hinigaran, a worker was cutting a string wick when sparks flew and ignited a stock of explosives.
