Irish court hands out heavy fines and suspended jail terms over fatal accident 28.11.06
Substantial fines and suspended jail sentences have been handed down by an Irish court in respect of a fatal accident in which a construction worker was electrocuted when a lorry-mounted pump contacted a 10Kv overhead power line during a concrete pour on a Wicklow building site.
Principal contractor Cormac Building Contractors were fined 150K€ (£107K) and the victim's employer, Kildownet Utilities Ltd, was fined 100K€ (£70K) for breaches of the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act at the site in Bray.
Cormac's site manager was found guilty of breaching S.13 of the Non-Fatal Offences against the Person Act for which he received a 3-year suspended jail sentence, Kildownet's director was found similarly guilty and also received a suspended jail sentence.
