Zimbabwean Klondike over, fallout remains
The Zimbabwean government's controversial 'Operation Restore Order' has seen the arrest of 16K illegal miners and the razing of many encampments adjoining mine fields this month where Klondikers were panning for gold, gold ore and diamonds, often in unsafe shallow mines whose collapse claimed scores of lives.
Environmental damage was also resulting from silting, but most of the miners were refugees from the collapsed farming sector and are now bereft of their livelihoods, selling gold on to entrepreneurs, and their temporary homes.
