US sub in submerged transit in Gulf hits Japanese tanker
No injuries were reported following the collision of the USS Newport News, crewed by 127 submariners and part of the Eisenhower Carrier Group of Norfolk, Virginia, and the Japanese tanker Mogamigawa, operated by Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha under contract to Showa Shell Sekiyu.
The accident occurred in the Strait of Hormuz between Oman and Iran, from where the 26-crew tanker was heading for Singapore when its stern was struck by the bow of the submarine in submerged transit.
