Senior Azeri plant management charged over plant explosion
The explosion late last month in the Synthesis Caoutchouc Plant in Sumgayit, Azerbaijan, in which 3 workers died has led to the arrest and charging of 3 senior staff of Azerkimya under the Azeri Criminal Code.
Investigation revealed that Sumgayit Fire Fighting Department had made written representation to the company and senior management advising of the risk of explosion given that plant equipment had been out of commission for some time.
When a pump failed in the Butadiene Workshop in the plant on December 29th it was alleged that upon instruction from management to restart the pump, a surge of high pressure led to an explosion.
