Criminal investigation into Italian ferry/ship collision off Sicily 17.01.07
A criminal investigation has been launched following the collision of the Italian Railways high-speed hydrofoil, Segesta Jet, and an Antiguan-flagged container ship, Susan Borchard, just outside the harbour of Messina, Sicily, 4 people died and scores were injured, some jumping into the Messina Strait as fire broke out.
The fatalities were crew members, one was decapitated in the accident.
Investigators are studying the Vessel traffic service (Vts) satellite control system which monitors navigation in the Strait, the container ship was travelling north-south towards Israel and would have been in the right-hand shipping lane, the ferry from Reggio Calabria would have been on the left, a 3rd vessel in the area, the private ferry Zancle, is being dismissed as being involved in the incident.
