Inspectors body expresses concern about status of HSE’s Corporate Medical Unit
Prospect, the body that represents 1,750 HSE inspectors and scientists, is expressing its concerns about the possible outcome of a review being conducted that may, in its view, undermine government efforts to tackle work-related ill health through its strategic Health, Work and Well-being - Caring for our future.
The review may involve a further diminishing in strength of the HSE Corporate Medical Unit (formerly the Employment Medical Advisory Service) to around 7 doctors working as medical inspectors and 25 nurses, a sizable depletion in force from the 120 staff employed in the early 90's.
The Chair of Prospect’s HSE branch explains:
“The government wants to create workplaces where we both protect the health and well-being of employees and reduce the costs of sickness absence: at the same time they want to enable people to improve their own health and well- being. Yet these good intentions require action to become reality: the levels of activity funded to achieve this border on complacency.
Not only does the UK lag way behind the rest of Europe in occupational health provision; the parlous state of our occupational medicine facilities means the true size of the problem has been underestimated.” Read more at Prospect
