Crane bolts - technical alert for construction
HSE's Construction Division has issued a Technical alert for the construction industry explaining a number of important aspects of high tensile bolt used in connections on tower cranes, indicating that it should be read in conjunction with the safety alert on the use of tower cranes issued in October 2006.
HSE says the technical alert should be considered to be supplementary guidance to that contained in BS 7121 Part 2:2003 Code of practice for safe use of cranes – Inspection, testing and examination.
The new alert is directed at those responsible for the installation, thorough examination, inspection, maintenance and operation of tower cranes, and relates to the following:
use of correct bolt connections;
examination of bolt connections before assembly;
bolt connection assembly;
re-tensioning of bolt connections;
regular inspection and examination of bolt connections; and
taking cranes out of service when bolt connection problems occur.
