Zoo chief admits safety breaches
A zoo boss has admitted breaching safety laws in connection with the death of an elephant keeper. Richard Hughes, 34, of Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, died nine days after being struck by cow elephant Kumara at Chester Zoo on 8 February, 2001. Professor Gordon Reid, director of the North of England Zoological Society, which runs the zoo, admitted breaching the Health and Safety Act. He was accused of failing to ensure the health, safety and welfare of staff. Prof Reid said: "I'm very sorry about what happened and I hope these proceedings today will help bring some closure. "We at the zoo are certainly constantly reminded of Richard's death and it's very painful for us. "But, obviously, it can't be anything like as painful as it is for his immediate family."
