Prosecution after fatal fire at unlicensed Russian furniture
In the wake of the fire this week at the Agrospetsmontazh furniture factory in Yekaterinburg in which 12 workers died, Russian authorities are opening a criminal investigation, the premises were operating without certification from the local fire department.
A couple of years ago the warehouse building was leased out and converted into a furniture manufacturing unit, but it lacked a sprinkler system and it lacked safety exits as well as featuring casually stored combustible items.
Most victims succumbed to toxic fumes from burning furniture, others tried jumping from windows, it is alleged that staff tried to control the blaze themselves before later contacting the fire service.
