Confined space accident kills 6 Spanish scientists in underground chamber 12.02.07
6 of a party of 29 Spanish scientists and naturalists died in a confined space accident at the weekend at the Los Silos complex in northern Tenerife.
Members of the Instituto Astrofisica de Canarias (IAC) and the Asociacion Tinerfena de Amigos de la Naturaleza (ATAN) encountered a gaseous atmosphere some 2 km underground while negotiating the Piedra de los Cochinos chamber.
The complex was constructed 200 years ago with a view to taking water run-off from Mount Teide and had been closed since 1964.
The party was led by 3 guides, but the most knowledgably experienced individual was unable to attend and was in contact by telephone only.
