Loose Gear inspections

I work aboard a seismic survey vessel and am at present udating the lifting register onboard.
The question I have concerns Loose gear and in particular webbing strops used for lifting operations.

Does anyone know where I can find more information concerning this equipment?

I believe that a competent person can perform a visual inspection of the equipment, but do these items Shackles, Webbing strops, Round slings etc need re-certifying after a specific period as with lifting equipment (Cranes, winches, eyebolts ect) or can they remain in service until the competent person assesses them to be no longer safe?

All help in this matter would be greatly appreciated.
