Derailment leads to 2 deaths at Swiss Alpine tunnel site
Alptransit Gotthard AG has reported the deaths of 2 tunnel construction workers at the underground Bodio construction site in the NEAT Gotthard-Basis tunnel.
The victims were part of a crew engaged on track maintenance and were located in front of a stationary maintenance train.
A train pulling several wagons of spoil approached on the adjacent track and was heading for the tunnel entrance; for some unknown reason the last wagon derailed as it was passing the stationary maintenance train and sufficient contact was made to cause the inert train to roll forward and crush 2 of the workers, another worker managed to escape with light injuries.
