16 dead in Iraqi hospital fire, emergency procedures criticised
An electrical fault condition has been speculated as the cause of the weekend fire which destroyed the 6-storey Nasiriyah General Hospital in southern Iraq and left 16 persons dead and 75 injured, of 200 patients and staff evacuated many had to leap to safety from first and second floor windows.
There have been allegations of a lack of emergency equipment at the hospital, with no fire extinguishers available and only one ambulance, and a lack of an emergency evacuation plan.
