Frenchman claims survival of 35 days in underground cave
A 48-year old Frenchman's tale of 35 days underground in an abandoned mushroom cavern in southern France has been met with amazement and scepticism.
The victim was discovered by gendarmes who painted the floor as they traversed the maze of subterranean caves, which once housed mushroom beds, to secure their return route, and encountered the victim after 90 minutes of searching.
His vehicle had been discovered by a group of children who alerted local police in Madiran in the Hautes-Pyrenees, his survival he attributed to eating rotten wood and clay, imbibing water running down the walls.
It is difficult to comprehend how he could have endured the penetrating subterranean cold by sleeping under plastic covers, or managed to remain sufficiently active in the pitch darkness.
Although considerably weak and having apparently lost 18kg in weight, he discharged himself from hospital in Tarbes within 6 hours of admittance, medics pronouncing themselves satisfied with his condition.
