Fears that 15 passengers have drowned on overcrowded Tanzanian ferry
An overloaded Tanzanian ferry has sunk on Lake Victoria enroute from Kibara island to the mainland, of 30 passengers on board only 15 have been rescued, with 4 known to have drowned and 11 missing.
The vessel had a capacity to carry 20 passengers, additionally it has been alleged that the captain was informed of water ingress but declined to return to Kibara and pressed on towards the Tanzanian shoreline.
Overloading and a lack of safety apparatus is a feature of ferry traffic plying Lake Victoria.
