Hundreds of pilgrims killed in stampede at Indian hilltop temple
Several hundred worshippers undertaking the Kalubai Jatra pilgrimage to the hilltop temple of Mandhradevi at Waitaluka, 40 miles from Satara in western Maharashtra, have died in crushing when the narrowness of access paths and approaches failed to cope with the size of the crowd which appeared to panic.
It has been speculated that an electrical malfunction and subsequent fire may have led to the panic among the throng, as many as 300 pilgrims may have died and 50 are injured, the narrowness of pathways posed difficulties for the medical response.
The Kalubai Jatra has been ongoing for several days, Tuesday featured a particularly large crowd.
