Swiss tourists jump from windows after coach fire deactivates automatic door 01.02.05
Coach passengers trapped in their bus when the heat of a fire rendered the coach's automatic doors inoperable, resorted to breaking the windows with a hammer to escape the blaze on the Swiss motorway yesterday morning.
The coach was carrying 37 mostly older tourists from Geneva to Venice when the driver noticed an outbreak of fire as it was travelling between Gland and Rolle in western Switzerland.
A degree of panic gripped the passengers when they realised that the door was not functioning and it took some time to find a hammer to shatter the windows.
Around 10 passengers sustained a variety of cuts as they negotiated the shattered window frames and dropped the 4-5 feet on to the snow outside.
