SPAD speculated in Riga train crash, 3 killed
The Latvian Transport Minister has speculated that a signal passed at red (SPAD) is the likeliest cause of Wednesday morning's collision of two trains close to Riga's central station in which 3 persons were killed and around 20 injured.
An Ogre to Riga suburban service, pulling 4 carriages, struck a reversing Moscow to Riga intercity train which had deposited its passengers and was shunting twoards a depot, the speculation points to the suburban service having passed a red light.
The incident has surprised many as this network area of Latvian Dzelzcels (Latvian Railway) features one of Europe's more advanced rail junctions.
