Major sulphuric acid incident in western Sweden
It is estimated that around 11K tonnes of sulphuric acid escaped from a a tank at the Kemira Kemi chemical plant in central Helsingborg yesterday, an incident which saw 11 people hospitalised with respiratory problems and locals warned to remain indoors for 4 hours.
Speculation points to a burst water pipe having rendered unstable the ground around the acid vat which subsequently shattered, the issuing acid and water mixed and formed an acidic vapour cloud, 6 of those hospitalised were factory workers, 2 were police officers.
Considerable local disruption occurred with ferry services across the Ore Sund to Helsinger in Denmark being suspended for much of the day.
