CO poisoning kills 18 in Spanish mountain hostel
Spain's worst carbon monoxide poisoning incident for 15 years claimed the lives of 18 guests at the San Cristobal hostel, 6 miles from La Tolodella in the Els Ports district of the province of Castellon.
The victims were all locals, assembled from neighbouring hamlets to celebrate a 50th birthday of one of their number on Saturday evening.
Of the several dozen attending the event, 18 had made arrangements to lodge overnight and it is thought that gas stoves were lit to raise temperatures in the XVth century renovated building, however inadequate ventilation or leakage of gas from the stoves caused the fatalities.
