5 Estonians missing after freighter sinks in North Atlantic
Fears were expressed last night for the 5 missing Estonian crewmen of the freighter, Jokulfell, which sank late on Monday after sending a mayday signal some 60 miles northeast of the Faroes Isles in the North Atlantic.
The Estonian Maritime Board reported that 5 of the ship's 11-man crew, 4 Estonians and a Russian, were rescued by a Danish vessel, the Vaddern, but that one crew member is confirmed dead with the 5 others feared drowned.
Tesma Estonia Shipping Company has confirmed that all crew members were Estonian residents, the Isle of Man-registered Jokulfell was sailing from the Latvian port of Liepaja to Reykjavik with a cargo of 2K tonnes of steel.
Local wind conditions indicated gusting of 40 mph, it has been speculated that the cargo may have shifted, causing instability.
