Japanese thermal spring project drilling ignites methane pocket
Drilling work at the site of a new thermal spring in the Ukima district of Tokyo has led to a methane ignition as drilling reached a depth of 1,500 metres and was cutting through strata of volcanic ash and loam, experts have opined that a pocket of methane had probably been trapped therein.
At one stage flames were leaping 20 metres high and dozens of local residents had to be evacuated.
