Hundreds killed in worst Chinese mine accident in decades
It is reckoned that the latest coal mine disaster in China, in which at least 203 miners died in an explosion in Sujiawan colliery in Fuxin in the northeast province of Liaoning, is the worst since 1949.
China features around 80% of the world's mining fatalities, weakly regulated administration makes it difficult to collate accurate figures, but production and safety performance compare poorly with South Africa and the US.
The mine, which produces 1.5m tonnes of coal per annum, belongs to the Fuxin coal industry group, and experienced the explosion at 250m underground, it is unclear if earth tremors recorded locally had any connection with the incident
