Grinding sparks ignite vapour in Iowa railroad machine shop
Vapour ignition during grinding work in a machine shop in Council Bluffs, southwest Iowa, has led to an explosion which killed a 46-year old maintenance worker, an employee of Union Pacific Railroad.
The incident occurred as excess metal was being ground off a new fuel tank, sparks ignited the explosive mixture, producing a blast powerful enough to blow the victim 10 metres and cause considerable damage.
Three other workers were injured, given the scale of the blast casualties could have been much higher.
