South African rangers survive crocodile encounter
Two South African wildlife park rangers have survived an encounter with a crocodile although one of them lost a hand in the incident.
Both men, employees of iMfolozi Wilderness Park in KwaZulu Natal, were engaged on an anti-poaching detail and were fording a river when the crocodile struck.
The victim was dragged under the water by the arm, his colleague discharged several rounds from his rifle to scare the animal and ultimately resorted to thrashing the surface with his weapon in a desperate bid to distract the animal.
This had the desired effect, his selfless action is expected to earn him a bravery award.
