Fall from Carolina telecom tower highlights need for better fall protection 27.02.05
A 24-year old telecommunications worker has died in a fatal 50-metre fall during maintenance work on top of an American Tower Corporation structure off Interstate 95 in Wilson County, North Carolina.
The incident occurred in the middle of the night, it is understood that the victim, an employee of Excel Tower Systems, had attached his safety harness to an insecure anchorage point - an antenna on the tower.
North Carolina has been proactive in tackling the issue of regulating safe work on telecommunications towers, being the first to introduce safety regulations, although, crucially, sections governing fall protection, requiring employers to provide infallible fall protection systems, have yet to be passed, largely due to opposition from the industry itself.
