Portugal's Servicio Nacional de Bombeiros e Proteccao Civil (SNBPC) is investigating the incident in which 4 of its firefighting members died after becoming trapped in their wagon while tackling a major forest fire at the small town of Mortagua, in the Viseu district of the province of Coimbra.
One firefighter managed to escape to safety, it is thought that a sudden change in the wind direction proved to be a critical factor.
The very dry winter in Portugal has meant that the country has been experiencing a disproportionally high incidence of forest fire for the time of year.
