More than 150 dogs are thought to have perished in the fire which engulfed the 4-storey building which housed the Tokyo Pet Store in Tokushima.
Of the 4 staff on the premises at the time 2 required to be rescued, all 4 were treated for the effects of smoke inhalation.
The fire's locus is understood to have been a 2nd floor office, the dogs were housed on 3 of the building's floors behind mesh enclosures, perhaps 20 managed to escape the incident by their own resources.
