Window cleaner fell 8 metres

Lewes Crown Court has fined County Mall Management Ltd £25,000, and Mitie Cleaning SE Ltd £40,000, for breaching health and safety legislation in the circumstances of an accident during February 2002 in which a window cleaner employed by Mitie sustained seriously debilitating injuries when he fell 8 metres from a mobile elevating work platform while cleaning the walls of County Mall, Crawley. The working platform had detached from the lift because it had been incorrectly mounted.
Investigation established an inadequacy in employee training in the use of the platform equipment which was owned by County Mall Management Ltd, and, significantly, a permit-to-work system had not been adopted which might have revealed the accident victim's lack of training.
Both companies, who denied the breaches, must now also meet heavy court costs.
